Calmer by Nature DVDs Available

We now stock copies of the soothing 'Calmer by Nature' DVD by Barry Wheelock.  Calmer by Nature was originally designed to help people relax and cope with stress, anxiety and depression. But the film is now being used as a natural therapy for a growing number of wellbeing problems including Sensory Processing & Sensory Therapy, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Alzheimer’s, dementia, mental illness and insomnia.

Showing nature's images and her sounds have been scientifically proven to reduce the requirement for pain killers and therefore rank highly as Natural Therapies and the DVD is increasingly being used as a valuable tool by Occupational Therapists, health professionals, caregivers and carers.

Dance mapping: a window on dance

Dance mapping: a window on dance - the largest piece of research of its kind - offers a deep insight into the breadth and range of dance in England. The overwhelming message is that dance is an artform in growth with more than 40,000 people currently working in dance, and the amateur sector accounting for a fifth of all arts participation in England.  Dance mapping shows that popular culture has helped raise the profile of dance. TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Billy Elliot the Musical captured the public’s imagination, leading to classes across the country filling up with dance accounting for more than one in 10 of all adult learning classes.  To find out more about Dance mapping and read the full report, please go to www.artscouncil.org.uk/dancemapping

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Health: Arts & Health Website

If you practice within the field of the arts and health, you may be interested in the new website: http://www.sexanddrugsandrockandhealth.com/   This site looks at the issue of using the arts and culture to engage 'hard to reach' groups of people who need support to live healthier lives.  The site demonstrates how to use social market research to find out what target groups are actually interested in. It concludes that often this isn't health: it will almost always be popular culture.
The site shows, though case studies and theory, how to use popular culture to engage people in health issues. (Though the model could also be used with other things such as green issues).  The approaches include comedy, pop music, magazines and comics, crosswords, romantic novels and computer games.  The site has been well received by people such the National Social Marketing Centre and the Arts and Health department at Manchester Metropolitan University. The website includes documents and links which could be helpful to artists working in this field.
