Arts for Health Cornwall ran a project named 'Arts on Prescription' from 2005 to 2007 for women who were suffering from, or at risk of suffering, post-natal depression. The project consisted of blocks of 10 creative sessions led by a local artist and trained support worker, which were run at various Children's Centres accross
Cornwall
.
Post natal depression has been described as a "neglected public health problem with far reaching consequences". It affects approximately 10 to 15% of women in the early weeks following child birth. AFHC were keen to address this issue, and to improve the evidence base for how creativity might be used in this instance as a means of empowering and engaging those affected.
A few quotes from participants...
"All women should attend sessions such as this. Great for low self esteem, depression, and the daily stresses and strains in life"
"I don’t feel like such a monster of a mother because I know I’m not alone in my feelings about me and my children"
"I was really comfortable within the group and because of that I felt I could be very open and honest about very personal matters. There was a lot of support and confidentiality."
